Employees of The Polish Food Store in Houston will probably be working all night Wednesday making hundreds of delicious pączki to celebrate Tłusty Czwartek or Fat Thursday on February 27, 2014. Tłusty Czwartek is a traditional Polish feast marking the last Thursday before Lent. It is similar to the French festival of Mardi Gras which is celebrated on Fat Tuesday.

The traveling icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, in her “From Ocean To Ocean Global Pilgrimage” on behalf of life issues, will arrive in Houston on February 21, 2014. In the summer of 2012, a group of Catholic and Orthodox faithful began a global campaign in support of life and family under the patronage of Our Lady of Czestochowa (the Black Madonna). Starting in Vladivostok, Russia, the Ocean to Ocean Campaign in Defense of Life has received the support and blessings of numerous bishops in Europe, as well as Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church, and is expected to circle the globe and enkindle a sustainable movement to build a culture of life.

This is the second St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill. It was built in 1901, after their first church was destroyed by the 1900 Hurricane. My parents were married at St Stanislaus, I was baptized there as well as six of my seven siblings. This photograph is part of the Felchak family pictures and it is a post card. St. Stanislaus will celebrate their 125th Anniversary in November of this year. Fr. Jozef Musioł has asked me to write the history of the parish.

The 5th annual traditional Dożynki or Polish Harvest Festival will be held at Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church in Houston, Texas on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 20, 21 and 22, 2013. The festival starts on Friday evening from 4 pm to 10 pm and continues on Saturday and Sunday with two full days of live Polish music, dancing, folk programs, a dożynki parade with traditional harvest celebration and thanksgiving, national costumes, dożynki wreath, sharing of bread and other entertainment. There will also be activities for the kids, a silent auction and arts, craft and gift booths. Pierogi, bigos, gołąbki and other traditional Polish food will be served along with Texas barbecue and an assortment of delicious deserts. Soft drinks, beer and wine will also be available.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Stoneham, Texas will be hosting their annual homecoming bazaar on Sunday, May 26, 2013 on the church grounds. St. Joseph Catholic Church was established in 1909 by a group of Polish-speaking immigrants from the Grimes Prairie, Stoneham and Plantersville areas.
