Product Description Transit Maps of the World is the first and only comprehensive collection of historic and current maps of every rapid-transit system on earth. Using glorious, colorful graphics, Mark Ovenden traces the history of mass transit-including rare and historic maps, diagrams, and photographs, some available for the first time since their original publication. Transit Maps is the graphic designer's new bible, the transport enthusiast's dream collection, and a coffee-table essential for everyone who's ever traveled in a city.
a great ideaMay 21, 2010 R. A. Frauenglas(St. Louis, MO) TRANSIT MAPS of the World, by Mark Ovenden (148 pgs., 2003, 2005, 2007). This is the world's first published collection of every urban train map on this earth. The author has loved maps from childhood & was fascinated by transit systems. He even drew & painted his own transit maps. This book has grown out of that fascination. It's a great idea.
Look no furtherJanuary 16, 2010 Svaragon I bought this book as a present for my nephew, who is very into metro systems, and he absolutely loves it. All metro systems in the world are in this book! Maps, a little bit of historical overview, and it's not expensive at all.
Nice, but a link to a website with full-size maps is needed.November 2, 2009 James Pernikoff(Marietta, Georgia USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The concept of the book is brilliant, but the small size of the reproduced maps blunt the effect of the concept. I propose some sort of website that would be accessible, in some way, ONLY to purchasers of the book. This website would have full-size images of all the maps illustrated in the book.
Author loves 45 degree anglesJune 5, 2009 John Bernhardt(Falmouth, Ma United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This beautifully illustrated book documents subways and subway maps, a subject not fully explored in book form prior to this book. Of special interest are older maps that show the growth of systems and changing design aesthetics of subway mapping. The books limits itself to subway based rapid transit systems, so heavy urban rail systems are usually left out. It would be nice if there were a larger coffee table version of the book, so that one could see more detail in the maps. I found myself disagreeing with the author's preference for diagram subway maps over maps that are more topographically accurate.
