James Smock

James SmockJames Smock has always held an interest in his Polish ancestors and heritage. He is a native Houstonian with Polish roots in Bremond, Marlin and New Waverly, Texas.

James is a past president of the Polish Genealogical Society of Texas and was the founding webmaster of the PGST website. He also served as the Surname Index Coordinator from 1994 - 2000.

With a lifelong passion for photography, James can often be found with a camera around his neck. In addition to photographing family events and his grandchildren, he is the church photographer for St. Mary Catholic Church in Plantersville and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stoneham. 2011 Fifth Annual Polish Festival In Houston TexasOn a warm, windy spring day in Houston, Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church held their 5th annual Polish Festival. The festival was held on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1, 2011 on the church grounds in the Spring Branch area of Houston. A large crowd showed up on both Saturday and Sunday to enjoy the good food, cold piwo and great entertainment. The festival opened on Saturday morning at 10:00 am with a presentation of the American, Polish and Texas flags and singing of the national anthems of the United States and Poland. There was plenty of activity for young and old on both days.

Houston Texas Polish Festival - Our Lady Of Czestochowa ChurchHouston’s 5th Annual Polish Festival is a celebration of all things Polish – the food, the music, the language, the customs and the culture of the Polish people. The Festival will be held on the grounds of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church conveniently located at 1731 Blalock Drive, in the Spring Branch area of Houston, about 1.5 miles north of the Katy Freeway. Fish Fry and Barn Dance At Sonny Janczak's in Buckhorn TexasFish fries are pretty common on Friday’s during lent and on Friday evening, April 9, 2011, a group of Polish music lovers met in a large barn just a few miles east of downtown Buckhorn, Texas for some good food, music, fun and fellowship. As it turned out, the owner of the barn, Sonny Janczak, is not only an accomplished Polish fiddler, he’s also capable of cooking up some of the best fried catfish you’ve ever eaten. The fish was served with french fries and a host of other delicious meatless dishes brought by the guests.

Restoration Underway At St. Mary Catholic Church In Brenham

Restoration At St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Brenham, Texas.St. Mary, Immaculate Conception Catholic parish in Brenham, Texas was founded in 1870 and was the spiritual home of many of the early Polish immigrants in Washington County. The large brick church that is in use today was built in 1936. When I visited the church on March 10, 2011, the entire church was covered by sections of scaffolding supporting a plywood floor just below the arched ceiling of the sanctuary and the assembly area.
