St. Joseph in Stoneham’s 99th Annual Bazaar

St. Joseph’s Church in Stoneham, Texas held their 99th annual homecoming bazaar on Sunday, May 25, 2008. The weather turned out great, well maybe a little hot, but there were plenty of liquid refreshments to cool you off.

In addition to the regular early Sunday Mass, a special bazaar Mass was celebrated at 10:30 am in St. Joseph’s beautiful remodeled church by visiting priest Msgr. Boleslaus Zientek. Fr Bole’s brother Msgr. Benedict Zientek, Fr Raul Marterior from Navasota and St. Joseph’s pastor Fr Ed Kucera were also at the bazaar.

A self-serve barbecue pork and beef dinner with all the fixings was served beginning at 11am. {quotes}As usual, the dinner line was long, but well worth the wait.{/quotes} There was music and dancing from 11 am until 8 pm along with Grocery, Cake, Plant, Fruit and Sausage booths for the
adults and Train Rides and Moonwalks for the
kids.

Leland Fougeron and his crew along with auctioneer Tommy Szymczak and Bobby Fuchs did a great job selling all of the home made furniture, crafts, quilts and other items at the live auction. After the auction, a drawing was held for the raffle prizes which included a John Deere mower and lots of other great prizes.

You can find more photos of the bazaar on St. Joseph’s website.

History of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Stoneham, Texas

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stoneham TexasSt. Joseph Catholic Church was established in 1909 by a group of Polish-speaking immigrants from the Grimes Prairie, Stoneham and Plantersville areas. For many years, Stoneham’s Polish community worshiped either with the Polish community of St. Stanislaus in Anderson or with the Ukrainian-German community of St. Mary in Plantersville. In 1909, because of historical rivalries and antagonism rooted in the Old World and the arrival of a new pastor at St. Mary, the Polish community in the Stoneham area separated itself from the Plantersville community, joining itself with the Polish community of Anderson as a mission, and built its own sanctuary in the present location, under the spiritual leadership and jurisdiction of the Polish-speaking pastor of St. Stanislaus in Anderson. This arrangement would last until 1967 when jurisdiction would be transferred to St. Mary in Plantersville with St. Joseph as its Mission. This is the present status, uniting the communities of St. Mary and St. Joseph. …

Houston’s 2nd Annual Polish Festival – 2008

Houston Texas Polish Festival - Our Lady Of Czestochowa Church

The 2nd annual Polish Festival at Our Lady of Czestochowa Church in Houston was a rousing success. The festival was held on Saturday, May 3, 2008 on the church grounds in Spring Branch. Our Lady must have put in a good word for the parish because the weather was just about as perfect as it can get. The festivities started at 10 am and when I left a little after 9 pm it was still going strong. Everybody I talked to in the large crowd was having a good time.

Houston’s 2nd Annual Polish Festival – 2008

Houston’s Polish Festival is a celebration of all things Polish ? the food, the music, the language, the customs and the culture of the Polish people. The Festival is held on the grounds of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church conveniently located at 1731 Blalock Drive, about 1.5 miles north of the Katy Freeway. Featured at the Festival is a large sampling of traditional Polish foods such as pierogi (stuffed dumplings), golabki (cabbage rolls) and kielbasa (sausage) and a huge assortment of traditional cakes, rolls and desserts lovingly prepared by our parishioners. Music for this year?s festival will be provided by Brian Marshall and the Texas Slavic Playboys and Chris Rybak noted Texas accordionist; and traditional Polish songs and dances will be performed by our children?s choir throughout the day.

As part of the festival, visitors will be able to tour our beautiful church constructed in the traditional Polish style and will be able to see our Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the Polish Black Madonna, and learn of Our Lady?s 600 year old history as protector and defender of the Polish nation. In addition, our festival provides a supervised, safe and fun children?s area complete with games, face painting, kids? snacks and other fun activities to keep the kids entertained. Inside our beautifully decorated parish hall, visitors will find a silent auction full of unique items on which to bid while being entertained by a fine classical pianist. Our entire parish community extends an invitation for everyone to come and celebrate all things Polish with us ? Zapraszamy! (We welcome you!)
