History of St. Michael’s Parish in San Antonio

The parish of St. Michael’s in San Antonio was established on 8 November 1866 when Father Vincent Barzynski, a Resurrectionist priest, arrived from Rome. It was the third Polish Catholic church in Texas and the United States (after Panna Maria and St. Hedwig). It was also the third Catholic church in San Antonio-the first being San Fernando and the second being St. Mary’s.

Since the first Polish colony to arrive in San Antonio came within the octave of St. Michael’s feast day, it was decided that St. Michael would be the patron saint of the immigrants. And so it was appropriate that the Polish church in the city be named for their patron saint.

Polish Festival In Brenham, Texas

St. Mary Catholic Church In Brenham Texas Polish Festival

Each year, my wife and I attend quite a few church bazaars and festivals, especially in the fall of the year. We enjoy them all, but our favorite is always the last one we attend each year, the Polish Festival in Brenham. This year, the 17th Annual Polish Festival was held on Sunday, October 28th at St. Mary Catholic Church in Brenham, Texas.

Polish heritage is a big thing in Brenham and the surrounding areas so it was no surprise that a big crowd gathered for the fun and food. In addition to the natives, there were a lot of people with Polish roots from all over Texas.
